Caregiver burnout: straight answers to the questions caregivers ask
From Centis, a free care notebook you talk to.
Caring for a parent can wear you down in ways that are hard to explain to anyone who hasn’t done it. These are the questions caregivers ask most about burnout, getting a break and getting help, each answered plainly, with where the answer comes from.
None of it is a test to score yourself on. Whether what you’re feeling is burnout, or something else, is a question for your own doctor. If it ever feels like too much, you can call or text 988 at any hour, free and confidential.
The questions
- What is caregiver burnout?Exhaustion, physical, emotional and mental, that builds while you take care of someone else. It's common, and it isn't a sign you care less.
- Is it normal to resent caring for a parent?Resentment can sit right next to love. Feeling it doesn't make you a bad daughter or son.
- What is respite care?Short-term care for the person you look after, from someone else, so you can rest: for an hour, a day, or longer.
- How do I find respite care near me?Start with the ARCH National Respite Locator, and call or text the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116.
- Does Medicare pay for respite care?As part of hospice care: when the hospice team arranges a short inpatient stay to give the caregiver a rest. You may pay 5% of the Medicare-approved amount.
- Can I take time off work to care for a parent?Often, yes: the FMLA gives eligible employees up to 12 workweeks of unpaid, job-protected leave a year to care for a parent with a serious health condition.
- Where can a caregiver talk to someone?Call or text 988, any hour. It's free and confidential, and it's for emotional distress too, not only for crisis.
- How do I ask family for help with caregiving?Ask for one specific thing, with a time: “Could you pick up her refill Thursday?” gets a yes far more often than “I need more help.”
- How long does caregiver burnout last? There's no set amount of time. Cleveland Clinic says it can take several days to weeks to months, and that it doesn't go away overnight.
- What's the difference between caregiver burnout and compassion fatigue?Burnout is deep exhaustion and stress from caring for someone. Compassion fatigue is taking on their emotional stress and trauma. They can happen together.
- Can caregiver burnout be prevented?Cleveland Clinic suggests steps that help: someone you trust to talk to, realistic goals, time for yourself, and asking for help before it's too much.
